Bringing Abstraction into Reality

Paul Haber Retrospective Exhibition

Timepieces holding stories of their own, created from ideas by the hands of the artist who has reached and inspired so many others along his career. In these 37 artworks and installations, we see the artist bringing abstraction into reality. Paul Haber gives character to his creations, and each one transmits emotions. The retrospective exhibition at Aldabra Gallery invites the viewers to take a moment and immerse themselves in this journey of the artist and to freely interpret what they see.

There are happenings around us that sometimes we forget to look at - such as turbulence and gravity. We look at the sea for example but not at the stream and the forces acting on it. In Paul I find an artist who looks further than that; an artist so close to nature that he captures those forces and transforms them into an artwork that we can see. He finds the detail and he brings it to us in his own interpretation of nature. He captures the inverted spaces and the weight of gravity into natural forms. He gives them confidence in strong, particular colours.
''His art connects us to nature, to each other and to ourselves. ''
Haber’s art reminds us to look further and not to be oblivious to the forces affecting our realities. His art connects us to nature, to each other and to ourselves.

On Thursday 6th December 2018, I have had the privilege to attend to the MSA Gold Medal Award Ceremony presented to Paul Haber where I have witnessed a collection of experiences and emotions that the artist has presented to a global community through his dedication. Along with the artist’s outstanding career and profound relationship in Ceramics technique, I am particularly touched by the artist’s genuinity in his devotion.

Aldabra Gallery welcomes the public to visit Paul's work which is available up to 3rd January 2019.

Musician Toni Curmi is back on Guitar after 10 years!

On Thursday 22nd November 2018, Toni Curmi mesmerized the audience at Pintonino Valletta Waterfront - Malta. Toni Curmi was the special guest at the 3rd edition of Arte e Vino: a fusion of arts, music, food and wine by Art Malta Sound in collaboration with S. Rausi Trading Ltd. The evening entitled ‘I Have Something to Tell You’ creatively directed by Artist Aaron Lu, invited the star of the evening to share his journey as a musician.

The niches at the location held photographs, awards and memorable icons from Toni’s experiences. The audience joined the warm atmosphere of the evening in conversation and enjoyed a dedicated menu by the host and chef patron Charles Pintonino. From his early days in approaching music, the first encounter and inspiration to master his techniques in guitar playing, the sudden steps, lifetime experiences, obstacles and joyrides - the audience listened attentively to what Toni had to tell us. ‘Hekkoja’ the Ibanez Guitar hand painted by Aaron Lu was unveiled. Toni surprised us all with a memorable live performance and took us on a journey in music; transposing us from one story to another in sounds. Through his experience in Sitar playing and intensive interest in music techniques, Toni reached another level of maturity in guitar playing which was expressed with great passion to the delight of those present.

Noel Scerri, who has known Toni and played together for many years, expressed that he was blown away and surprised by Toni’s excellent performance. ‘Vice Versa’ the painting by Aaron Lu which was presented at the evening depicts the artist's vision of Toni and Noel as ‘musically inseparable’ and a complimentary reflection of one another. The painting which is the cover of the new upcoming album by Swara was declared as a silent auction with the proceeds going to the making of the album.

Also present at the event were Mr. Kurt Camilleri representing SmartCity Malta, Mrs Anna Ferris representing Faber Castell - The Concept Malta, artists and friends.

Retrospettiva ta' Paul Haber

11/3/2018

Fit-3 ta' Novembru 2018, infetħet il-wirja ta' Paul Haber fil-Gallerija Aldabra, fi SmartCity. F' din ir-Retrospettiva li b'unur qiegħda tippreżenta 37 skultura u installazzjoni, Haber isir l-awtur li jerħi l-ispirtu tiegħu fi tfittixa ta' disinji ġodda, id f' id mal-istint artistiku tiegħu. Skultura għaqlija, b' ambizzjoni fit-teknika u b' kuluri saturata li fi kliem l-artist, huma ''l-kuluri ta' Malta.''

Il-forom jirriflettu xbihat fin-natura, xi mdaqqiet karnali. Oħrajn juru r-rabta tal-artist mal-wirt kulturali ta' pajjiżu. Ir-Retrospettiva ta' Haber hija mixja f'żewġ vjaġġi paralleli; l-ewwel mixja hija matul l-esperjenzi tal-artist li jesebixxi b'tant dedikazzjoni u umilta` minn art twelidu, saħansita fiċ-ċentru ta' Pariġi f' Ġunju 2018.

It-tieni mixja hi dik bejn dak li jesperjenzaw is-sensi viżwali fl-estetika u bejn is-sotto-konxju f'għarfien surrealista. L-artist qiegħed ipoġġi f'armonija disinji u kuluri avventurużi, fejn waqt li l-għajn tal-udjenza tiġri ma' dawn id-disinji, l-udjenza ssib ruħha f'mistoqsija quddiem dawn il-kompożizzjonijiet ġodda.

Tispikka l-liberta` tal-artist f'dawn ix-xogħlijiet li mhumiex ristretti anzi qalbiena.  Il-kunfindenza u l-esperjenza tal-artist fil-ħidma taċ-ċeramika, tippermettilu jintilef fil-produzzjoni artistika waqt li jħaddan id-dixxiplina fit-teknika, u joħloq b'għożża kompożizzjonijiet b'karatteristiċi individwali.

Paul Haber ggradwa fiċ-ċeramika mill-Kulleġġ tal-Art Ċentrali ta' St. Martin f'Londra wara studji intensivi fl-arti u l-iskultura f'Malta, l-Italja u r-Renju Unit.

A Message from Noel Scerri at The Plaza

This is an experience I will never forget... a piano improvisation at the center of an art gallery. It is hard to explain how powerful and at the same time magical it is. It is truly inspiring.
I would like to thank all the audience that have watched my performance.

Wish to personally thank Aaron Lu Luigi Rossi and Gabriella Mallia for making this a reality and for their continuous support. Would also like to thank the management of The Plaza, Sliema for providing the space and for their contribution in art.

Another thanks goes to Brincat Pianos for providing this amazing piano and also to Andrew Bugeja for perfecting its condition.

Would also like to thank Just Burger for their kindness in sponsoring our food.
Special thanks to my family (especially to my wife Sylvana), to Cushion and all my friends.
And finally a big well done to all the artists involved at Aldabra Atelier & Gallery❤️

Procedure Oriented

10/10/2018

In the fast-paced age we live in, speed is sometimes mistaken for quality.
In visual arts as in music, the 'tempo' does not determine the quality of the art piece but rather gives it style and mood.

Following a teaching career of 40 years, Alfred Camilleri recognizes the intensity of timings in a composition.
Every artist has his own 'tempo'.

Today we are truly honored to announce that Alfred will be observing #AlanAquilinaCase and Nikolai Bonello Jenkins to help them grow closer to their 'tempo' in art.

'Procedure Oriented' is one of the activities atAldabra Atelier & Gallery where young talent is given the opportunity to cross junctions in direction to their own pathways; learning at their own pace by observation and reflection through a constant critical reflection.

Alan and Nikolai will be working on the Project 'I Come in Peace' in Aldabra's Atelier #3, which will be exhibited, at Aldabra Gallery, SmartCity Malta between 1st - 7th May 2019.
